A traditional way to enhance your enjoyment of the sauna is to go and roll in the snow. The way it works is as follows:
1) Warm yourself properly in the sauna
2) Run outside, use flipflops to protect your feet if you like
3) Dive in the snow and roll around quickly
4) Run back in and enjoy the rush of blood to all parts of your skin.
My children tried this out for the first time in their lives tonight. The first time they went with dad, and did not actually have the courage to dive in the snow. The next time round they did, and once they had tried it, they would not stop. As they put it: “Se oli niin jäätävän kylmää ja jäätävän kivaa!” Roughly: It was so freezing cold and so freezing fun! I suspect the use of jäätävän as a word of emphasis was inspired by Haloo Helsinki’s determination to “enjoy this life, so freezingly short” i.e. Ja nautin mun elämästä, tästä jäätävän lyhyestä. A cool song by the way, check it out on YouTube. So I warmly recommend that you try a roll in the snow, another easy way to make an ordinary day extraordinary.
P.S. In fact this took place a few weeks ago when the snow was softer than now, but it took me a while to get the site configured. They have forecasted some snow fall for the week-end, and powdery snow gives the biggest shock.
